PV Diesel Controller vs Zero Export Controller

Understand the practical difference between generator-aware solar control and utility-point zero-export control before selecting hardware or writing a control philosophy.

Unified SCADA for PV diesel generator control and zero export monitoring

Direct comparison

They solve related—but different—power-flow problems

A zero-export controller regulates power at the utility point of connection to prevent unwanted grid export. A PV diesel controller regulates solar while one or more generators are operating, maintaining an engineered genset-loading reserve and preventing reverse power toward the generator. A hybrid plant may require both functions in one coordinated system.

Zero Export

Measures the grid connection and curtails PV to keep export within a configured limit.

PV–Diesel Control

Uses generator status, online capacity and plant load to calculate safe available PV.

Selection questions

Choose from the operating modes—not the product label

  • Does solar operate with the utility, gensets, or both?
  • Can multiple gensets run on a common bus?
  • What minimum loading must each online generator retain?
  • Where is the point of common coupling for export control?
  • Can each inverter accept an external active-power command?
  • What happens on communication or meter failure?
  • Is local HMI, SCADA, historian or remote monitoring required?

Engineering scope

Protection and control must remain separate and coordinated

Active PV curtailment complements—but does not replace—approved generator protection, reverse-power relays, interlocks, breaker logic or inverter protections. JME reviews the SLD, meter locations, controller data, inverter protocols and failure states before defining the solution.

Engineering answers

Frequently asked questions

Can a zero-export controller work during genset operation?

Only if its measurement reference, control logic, inverter commands and generator operating limits are specifically engineered for that mode.

Does a PV diesel controller guarantee fuel savings?

No fixed saving can be guaranteed. Results depend on solar availability, plant load, genset efficiency, minimum loading and operating hours.

Can both functions use the same meters?

Sometimes, but meter location, accuracy, update rate and communications must suit every required control mode.
