Beyond matching voltage and frequency

What must a synchronization system control?

A practical system manages the complete operating sequence: generator start and stop, voltage and frequency matching, phase-angle verification, breaker permissives, load acceptance, active and reactive load sharing, source priorities, protection status and safe separation from the bus.

01 · SYNCHRONIZE

Safe breaker closing

Verify voltage, frequency, phase sequence and phase angle before the generator breaker is permitted to close.

02 · SHARE

Stable load sharing

Coordinate kW and kVAr contribution across online generators according to available capacity and demand.

03 · MANAGE

Plant power strategy

Sequence machines, maintain reserve, shed selected loads and coordinate utility or renewable sources.

Applications

Synchronization architectures for industrial power systems

MULTI-GENSET

Generator-to-generator paralleling

Operate two or more gensets on a common bus with automatic sequencing and balanced load contribution.

UTILITY

Genset–WAPDA synchronization

Coordinate generator and grid operation where the approved protection and operating philosophy permit paralleling.

TRANSFER

Closed-transition sequences

Engineer controlled make-before-break or seamless-transition logic according to switchgear and protection capability.

CAPACITY

Automatic load management

Match connected loads to available generator capacity using priorities, permissives and staged load shedding.

SOLAR

PV–genset coordination

Integrate solar contribution while respecting minimum genset loading, reverse-power protection and plant demand.

SUPERVISION

SCADA and historical records

Display source status, breaker positions, loading, alarms, events and operating trends in one view.

Controller integration

Work with suitable existing equipment

JME works with dedicated platforms including Deep Sea, DEIF, Woodward, ComAp and Sices. Existing controllers may be retained when their functions, communications and control interfaces meet the required operating philosophy.

Every project begins with the actual alternators, governors, AVRs, breakers, protection relays, CT/PT circuits, controller capability and communication documentation—not a fixed controller brand.

Engineering and commissioning

From SLD review to verified operation

SURVEY

Assess the installed plant

Review SLDs, generator ratings, controllers, governors, AVRs, switchgear, protection and existing problems.

DESIGN

Define the control philosophy

Document modes, priorities, sequences, interlocks, protection interfaces, load steps and operator authority.

TEST

Commission methodically

Verify I/O, breaker interlocks, synchronization, loading response, alarms, mode transitions and failure behaviour.

Sazgar Engineering Works

The project progressed from independent generators to three synchronized gensets on a common bus, with expansion planning, approximately 5 MW solar visibility, WAPDA coordination, VCB automation and centralized SCADA/EMS supervision.

Technical questions

Genset synchronization FAQs

What is the purpose of a sync-check relay?

A sync-check relay permits breaker closing only when defined voltage, frequency and phase-angle conditions are satisfied. It is part of the synchronization safety architecture, not a substitute for the full control and protection scheme.

Can different generator sizes share load?

Yes, when controllers, governors, AVRs, CT/PT circuits and control philosophy are suitable. Load contribution is normally coordinated relative to each generator’s available capacity.

Can existing Deep Sea, DEIF or ComAp controllers be retained?

Often yes. JME first verifies model capability, wiring, firmware, communication maps, protection interfaces and the operating modes required.

Can generators synchronize with WAPDA?

Technically possible systems require an appropriate protection scheme, utility requirements, switchgear capability and approved operating philosophy. The design must be assessed project by project.

Can JME troubleshoot an unstable synchronization panel?

Yes. Share the SLD, controller models, alarm history, breaker information, photos and a description or video of the failure through the system-recovery intake.

Planning synchronization—or fixing an unstable system?

Send the SLD, generator ratings, controller models, breaker details and present problem. JME will review the likely architecture, risks and next engineering step.
