Reverse Power Protection and Minimum Genset Loading with Solar PV
How generator protection, minimum loading and active solar curtailment work together when grid-tied PV operates with diesel gensets.

Engineering principle
Protecting a genset requires more than a single threshold
When PV production approaches or exceeds the plant load carried by an online generator, real power through the genset can fall below the intended operating reserve or reverse direction. A properly engineered system measures the condition, curtails PV, supervises response and retains independent electrical protection.
Minimum Load Reserve
Keeps a configured active-power margin on each online generator.
Reverse-Power Relay
Provides protection according to the approved generator and switchgear design.
Dynamic PV Limit
Adjusts permitted inverter output as plant load and online capacity change.
Ramp Control
Avoids aggressive solar commands that can destabilize the power balance.
Fail-Safe Logic
Defines the required response to meter, controller or communications failure.
Event Visibility
Records alarms, modes and power trends for diagnosis and commissioning.
Control sequence
From live measurement to verified response
- Confirm generator breaker and running status
- Determine total online generator capacity
- Measure genset, PV and load power at approved points
- Calculate PV allowance with operating reserve
- Send supported active-power limit to inverters
- Verify inverter response and power direction
- Alarm abnormal response and apply defined fail-safe action
JME integration
SYNCGEN control with SCADA evidence
JME can integrate generator-controller status, power analyzers, inverter limits, breaker feedback, alarm logic and historical trends into one maintainable control environment.
Engineering answers
Frequently asked questions
Is minimum genset loading the same for every generator?
No. The required operating reserve depends on the engine, alternator, loading pattern, manufacturer guidance and site operating philosophy.
Can solar curtailment replace a reverse-power relay?
No. Curtailment is an active control function; the relay is part of the protection system.
Why is the inverter response time important?
The controller must account for measurement, communication and inverter response delays when setting reserves and ramp limits.
